Qigong for Dance
Chi Kung for Dance
Ch’i Kung for Dance

An Exercise For a Small Dance Company

Before beginning this exercise most the people in the group should be comfortable in perceiving chi-energy in the body and hands.

Read and do the exercises in the Section About Art Energy to gain this skill.

Then go to the following:

Remember a truly happy moment in you life (or make up one). Center in that feeling of joy, and allow it to become energy flowing through your whole body. Allow it to transform into gentle physical movements.

(This is not about “Dance” yet.  It’s about letting the chi energy manifest itself in movement).

When the energy is flowing nicely, bring your attention to what the body is doing—and slowly reduce all the movements into the one movement that best expresses that joy.

When you find it freeze into it.  Do not move. Dance in your stillness by radiating the energy from all of your being.

After this is accomplished the dancer returns to the group. A new person comes before the group and does the exercise: a remembered happy moment becomes movements--becomes a single movement--then freeze and radiate the energy.  Then she or he returns to the group.

--------------------
The next step is for both dancers one and two to come forward—each with their remembered one movement as a target. Each improvises a minute or so as they move into their targeted stillness.  Then they freeze and emanate the energy. Then they radiate the energy directly at each other. Then they circle the energy between each other.

As this is happening the group watches and comments on what they are perceiving. A third or fourth person may now join the process. In time the entire group may join in.

So you have a dance piece that has its dénouement in physical non-movement.

After the dancers gain energy-awareness-projection, the technique may be included in any dance piece. The  goal is to have the audience subliminally sense the projected chi-energy. If that happens expect a long standing ovation.
--------------------
(This exercise is potential very hot. I was thinking of calling it A Bacchanalian Energy Orgy, but luckily didn’t (that would be for a different sort of web site.)  But just be aware of its sensuous--as well as sensual--power.)

Also, Chi--Energy is generally perceived, rather than seen. To better understand this process imagine you are a contented purring cat resting on your haunches. You are not looking or searching for an unsuspecting bird or mouse.  But because you are automatically perceiving--even somehow behind you--any little critter that enters your space is history. It’s not about rational  thought. It’s about a pure focused effortless awareness.
